That'll Get You Killed: Harding and Neve in the Ossuary

Second post in a series about the Ossuary. Read this one first.

Harding's Room

Rook enters the second occupied room, which has Harding. You can see her plants overflowing into the prison, as well as her books, chair and sleeping bag. Harding's notes are:

Which all center around the fear that he will be unable to contain Spite, and that his friends will be hurt as a result. Interestingly, the third one also indicates that he doesn't want Spite to be hurt, either. When you speak to Harding, she has some very fascinating dialogue:

Don't worry Rook. I've got my eye on the prisoner.

and then

Rook, are you sure Spite isn't tricking you? What if there's no Lucanis- just the demon?

Lucanis is afraid that his friends still see him as his captors did; a dangerous thing to be contained-- and, moreover, he's afraid they're right. That maybe there is none of him left, after the Ossuary; that all there is is Spite.

Rook refutes this idea directly, saying Lucanis is not a demon. Harding then says:

Look around. This isn't the mind of a human being, let alone an Antivan Crow.

Lucanis is afraid that he is too broken by his experience to be useful, or even to be human anymore (this fucks me up guys... brb crying). Rook can refute this by affirming that Lucanis is still himself, even after what happened; that everyone has mental scars, and that it is Lucanis' choices which define him; or that the state of Lucanis' mind is irrelevant, and that Rook is trusting him to save the world. For the first two Harding will warn Rook that their attitude could get them killed. For all of them, she warns them to be careful and disappears.

Neve's Room

Neve's room is based on the one where you fought Calivan originally, signalling her place as one of the two biggest obstacles to Lucanis leaving the Ossuary. Her notes are on her desk (behind Rook when you enter), on the clue board behind her, and near the exit in a pile of books. They say:

All of this text surrounds Lucanis' fear that he's out of control, that he's become a monster that can't help anyone; that he's completely lost himself (this fr almost made me cry ;-; the fear and pain and helplessness here is staggering ;;;;-;;;;). When you talk to Neve, she asks if Rook should be there, since it's dangerous. The following description of Neve by Spite is the only difference I can find between the romanced/non-romanced versions of this quest (besides flirt dialogue); he'll say something different if the Nevecanis romance is active, but essentially he identifies Neve as someone strange/new but intriguing. Neve then says:

You know how he is, Rook. Even if you open the door, Lucanis won't walk through it. This is where he wants to be.

Reflecting his fear that even if people try to help him, he won't be able to accept it; that in some way he is doing this to himself, and that he'll choose it over something better. Rook and the others HAVE reached out to him before this; they have offered their help sincerely, and he has rejected it because he was ignoring his own suffering, and because he's afraid he's incapable of accepting it. Neve says this because she has been one of the most kind, and still, Lucanis has refused her help, to this point.

Rook has a choice here where they can say either that Lucanis always has options that they are here to show him, that they are not going anywhere until they help, or that Lucanis is losing himself in masks, and Rook can handle the real him. Neve then says:

You really think you can help him? You're such a sap, Rook.

Which is Lucanis reflecting the fear that he is not actually worth helping, and that the people around him are wasting their time trying to do so. Rook then says she needs to let them try, and Neve disappears.

We've again hit the limit of how long I'm willing to stretch dashes, so the (hopefully) final post will be here.

I'm really tired of UI being simplified to symbols on every website and program and app, especially on PC, but especially-especially on mobile when I click 'desktop view' on my browser. Where'd my text go? I want the text. Give me the text. I don't want to be bombarded by every site's minimalistic takes on mobile-friendly web design, and the same 5 symbols and 3 new ones. We're like three generations off from people knowing firsthand that the save icon is a floppy disk. I don't even click the save icon when I'm on PC. I don't even remember the last time I clicked one when I had the option to do anything else, because I'd rather use the text menu. Like, I use the keyboard shortcut or I click file>save. I'm not clicking a fucking modern hieroglyph in Corporation A's visual icon dialect. ('Dialect'? Icon dialect. Dialex-icon. Idk.)

I miss you, text-based internet.

I miss you, text-based PC operating system. (Windows 7. I'm using hyperbole here.)

Details and long-form content are being pushed aside by 60-second summaries and abbreviated/sanitized representations of images and ideas, by corporations dictating how the digital world should function. Also, fuck censoring words to be advertisement-friendly.

Anyway, I'm sick of deciphering what new random minimalist symbols are supposed to represent. There is a bottom line to minimalism, and right now, this is what the internet, UI in general, and web design feels like to me:

Then after that, in a digital world of shapeless, entirely minimalist colour, you'll have to decipher meaning from a highly specific colour used to convey a wide range of meanings depending on its digital value, and the colour shown before and after it. Let's call it hex-icon (like 'lexicon'), after the limited hex-code characters (0-6, A-F) used to comprise digital colour.

Can I call dibs on this highly specific colour as my new corporate-aesthetic-friendly minimalist username??

((Naming yourself after popular media is a trans rite-of-passage and I missed out the first time by renaming myself before I knew my gender.))

But wait, that's a highly incendiary colour!! Don't you know that #FF06B5 is associated with an anti-corporate agenda? You can't pick that colour as a name on an internet owned and operated by the censorship overlords. Dangerous ideas like that are a violation of the Terms of Service. This post cannot be monetized. Name yourself something more family-friendly. That shade of magenta is too indecent. Think of the children.

I was gonna assign myself a less fruity colour, and then I realized I was about to implement some kind of colour-based naming caste system, where only certain tones are allowed as names depending on your status, and aberrant colours are disallowed due to controversy. Suddenly, the Homestuck quote I just used makes sense for the direction I was headed with Cyberpunk 2077 magenta (fuschia, AKA a royal blood colour in Homestuck) being forbidden in hexicon.

The saying was right: every so often someone does reinvent Homestuck. I just went about it from a moebius double reacharound direction. Thankfully, I have the Homestuck experience to tell me when I've arrived at the solution.

What Will Be Left, Then?: Illario in the Fade Ossuary

This is the third part in a series of posts about Spite's Fade Ossuary. The first is here, the second is here.

Illario's Room

Illario is the final and greatest obstacle to Lucanis getting out of the prison. He stands in front of the vial (that thing's like a fucking... pitcher lol) of Lucanis' blood. The notes in his room are located behind Rook when they enter inside the boat, on the table by the ledge, and under the "vial" when you break it. They read:

I think this is less a single emotion and more of an amalgam of feelings that Lucanis has had regarding Illario throughout the game so far: the fear that he'd be killed, the pain and anger at his betrayal, and that he ultimately still loves Illario as his brother, despite everything he's done. When you speak to him, Illario will say:

Rook... you're too good to be wasting your time in a place like this. Forget about my cousin. You've got much more important things to worry about, don't you? You've got the weight of the world on your shoulders.

Which is, again, Lucanis thinking that he doesn't deserve Rook's help, that his feelings aren't important and his issues aren't worth dealing with-- that he is wasting Rook's time. Spite then gives you some insight into Lucanis' feelings by saying:

Sharp. Jagged edges. Hurt with every breath. Grief and relief. Hope and anger. Mixed.

Which is.... a lot. He loves Illario, he's happy that he's safe, but he's angry, devastated, that his brother would betray him like that. He's extremely conflicted about what he wants to do, how he can fix this situation; before Rook enters the Ossuary, Lucanis calls Illario an idiot and asks how he's supposed to deal with this. Illario has utterly complicated the situation by mixing together Lucanis' three categories of people, which Spite tells Rook earlier are family, contracts and enemies. What is Illario, now that he has done this?

After more commentary from Rook and Spite, Illario reiterates that Rook should leave, that letting Lucanis out is dangerous. If Rook asks the question here, Illario will talk about how the entire Dellamorte family perished in the war of succession except for Caterina, Illario, and Lucanis. He will ask what will be left if they fight each other, and if Rook really thinks they and the Veilguard will survive it. This once again emphasizes Lucanis' fear that he will destroy everything he has left as he pursues vengeance; is it really worth it, if he endangers what he values?

Rook can here say one of three things to Illario: that a confrontation with him is inevitable (1); that Illario is just trying to save his own skin (2); or that Lucanis should not let Illario speak for him, because the situation is his fault (3). I think Illario's responses are interesting, so I'll relay them:

1. A year he spent in this hole. In darkness. Dreaming of escape. Just to come home and kill his only family for a job he never wanted. 2. Would that be enough? Would anything? 3. Is it? Are you sure of that?

I think these answers indicate different things Lucanis is afraid of about himself, about Illario. That he will have to murder his only brother for something he doesn't even value; that killing Illario, sparing Illario wouldn't be enough to sate Spite, to stop his revenge; that maybe all of this isn't really Illario's fault, but Lucanis’ (I didn't say he was being super logical lol). Illario follows all three with:

Do you really think he made a deal with a demon? He's not even a mage! Or do you think, maybe, he just found the one there already? He'll carry this prison with him forever, and he'll fill it with corpses, given time.

Lucanis still doesn't know how he was able to contain Spite, why this is working at all, and that feeds into his fear that maybe he was always this way. Maybe it's just him who's uncontrollable and violent and dangerous (oh my gooooood Lucanis ;;;-;;; let me hug him, BW). He will never get out of here, and he will only destroy more and more of what he loves.

Rook can dismiss Illario by saying that Lucanis is a professional, who knows friend from foe; by saying he should evict his cousin from his mind; or that Lucanis doesn't know the future, and that fear is no reason to stay somewhere that's hurting him, especially when he's needed. Illario will warn Rook about the consequences of their choice, and Rook will say that no matter the outcome, they will help Lucanis.

I was hoping this would be the last post, but Illario had a lot to say, so Lucanis will get his own. Last one is here.

🐹the niches are all in simlish because (a) I don't know what names to put, (b) I don't want to accidentally naming anyone... 🐹The names are mostly (a) variations of the word "Hamster", (b) Hajsdhjsaiwhd << random typos, (c) variations of the names of the characters from Game of Thrones... 🐹The Epitaph (longer texts) on the niches are phrases from the song "Oh Danny Boy" and "Where Have All the Flowers Gone", or copies of the generated Epitaph from the game

HOW THIS WORKS:

⬆️both Base Game and L&D niches will start like this when clicked on. The "Assigned to" option will only appear if (1) someone a sim knows has passed away AND (2) a ghost sim cannot assign themselves

⬆️if a sim or ghost sim doesn't know anyone who has passed, only this option will appear

⬆️the "Assigned To" option will lead to this window where you may assign the niche to anyone that your sims has met and is deceased. The deceased sim could be a playable or non-playable ghost.

⬆️the default epitaph is "R.I.P" for both Base Game and L&D niches.

⬆️before assigning any epitaph, these are the available options for both Base Game and L&D niches.

⬆️Engrave epitaph ⚠️any sim can manually engrave epitaph to any assigned niche.

⬆️new epitaph will be shown.

⬆️new options will also appear. NOTE: for the base game - no portrait niches: the red interactions will not appear. But if you have the Life & Death pack and downloaded the base game niches, the red interactions will appear.

⬆️if you leave the epitaph blank then select "Read Epitaph", the epitaph will automatically becomes the object's description

⚠️A FEW IMPORTANT NOTES:

once a niche is assigned to a sim, it cannot be un-assign. It can only be reassigned to another sim.

if a sim is deleted permanently through cheat, AND the niche that was originally assigned to them has no epitaph, then the default "R.I.P." epitaph will disappear . i.e. You cannot "Engrave Epitaph" to a deleted sim's niche, but you may reassign the niche to someone else.

on a Cemetery community lot, sims will autonomously do any of the funeral interactions with the niches and light candles. (I didn't add "light candles" to the interaction because I don't want candles to be lying around...)

⚠️OTHER KNOWN ISSUES

for the base game - no portrait ones, sometimes a deceased sim cannot be assigned to the niche due to (a) they are currently in a situational event (b) has crossed over (c) reborn

on one occasion during early stage, a niche just gradually fade out and disappeared...I cannot recreate the situation nor did it ever happened again...
